History

The Vincentian Day Care Center became a reality in 1972 in response to a growing need in the North Hills and surrounding areas. Working mothers and fathers were deeply concerned about the placement and the well-being of their children during their working hours.

The Vincentian Sisters of Charity undertook the ministry of providing care for children ages three to five, by converting a large, unused room in the Motherhouse for this purpose. One section of the room was a play area with colorful tricycles and a gym corner. Another space had a variety of learning areas. Still another was used for a lunchroom with furniture suitable for young children. The beauty of the Motherhouse surroundings and the opportunities to share, learn, and form friendships became the focal points in the child's development. The children engaged in free-play, music activities, art, story periods, viewing of video learning tapes, and other pre-school learning activities. To ensure a continuity of health patterns, a hot lunch and two snacks were provided daily. The younger children were required to take a two-hour nap. Wholistic development of the child was a priority.

With an ever-increasing demand for child care services, the Vincentian Sisters of Charity decided in 1993 to build a larger, more comprehensive facility. The site chosen was the parklike grove of trees near the Vincentian High School. Formerly, the Center could accomodate 60 children, ages three to six. The new facility accomodates care for infants as young as six weeks, toddlers, pre-schoolers, and kindergarten students for a total of 150 children. Quality care and wholistic development of the child are the focus of the staff at the Center in a safe, secure, and aesthetically pleasing atmosphere.

The Vincentian Child Care Center is licensed by the Department of Public Welfare of the State of Pennsylvania. In the past 25 years, over 1,000 children have gone through this outstanding program which promotes a healthy learning atmosphere for early childhood development.
